一体何があったのか。

2025年8月、天草を襲った豪雨の後、畑に足を踏み入れることができませんでした。私はしばらく声が出ませんでした。

土砂が流れ込み、畑への道を完全に塞いでいました。2日後、乾き始めた土砂を乗り越えて、畑に入りました。畑の一部も土砂が流れ込み、数本の木は押し倒されていました。実をつけたまま倒れている木もありました。10年近くかけて育ててきたデコポンの畑です。剪定の仕方、肥料のやり方、収穫のタイミング。ひとつひとつ、自分の手で覚えてきた木でした。

自然が相手の仕事だということは、わかっていたつもりでした。台風も、猛暑も、これまで何度も経験してきました。でも、目の前の光景は、これまでの「経験の範囲」を超えていました。

一体何があったのか。

その問いは、天候の話だけではありませんでした。自分の中で、何かが崩れていく感覚がありました。

あれから、ちょうど1年が経ちました。

「50年に一度」が「10年に一度」になっている

九州はもともと雨の多い地域です。それでも近年は、降るときと降らないときの差が、以前よりずっと激しくなっているように感じていました。

以前、地域の農業インフラについて書いたとき、天草は柑橘に適した気候だと述べました。それは今も変わりません。ただ、その「適した気候」の振れ幅そのものが、以前とは違うレンジに入ってきているのではないか。そんな肌感覚を、特にこの３、４年は強く感じていました。

「50年に一度の豪雨」という言葉を、ここ数年で何度耳にしたでしょうか。数字の上では「50年に一度」でも、体感としては「10年に一度」に近づいている。これは私だけの感覚ではないと思います。

永年作物、つまり一度植えたら何十年も付き合っていく果樹という選択は、本来、土地との長い信頼関係の上に成り立つものです。その信頼関係の前提そのものが、静かに揺らぎ始めている。そんな気がしています。

撤退は、敗北なのか

畑を見ながら、私はある決断を迫られました。

農道の回復、被害を受けた木を、時間とお金をかけて元に戻すのか。それとも、この畑という形そのものを、手放すのか。

正直に言うと、最初は「撤退」という言葉に強い抵抗がありました。10年やってきたことを、途中でやめる。それは負けたということではないか。そんな感覚が、頭のどこかにありました。

でも、少し時間をおいて考えてみると、違う見え方をしてくることに気づきました。

元航空会社にいた頃、私は経営企画という仕事もしていました。機材の導入や退役を判断するプロジェクトにも関わりました。古い機体を、いつまで飛ばし続けるか。それは感情の問題ではなく、安全性とコストと、その先の事業計画の問題でした。

「使い続けること」がいつも正解とは限りません。ときに、潔く手放すことのほうが、次の展開にとって合理的な判断になる。前職で叩き込まれた感覚が、この畑の前で、静かに戻ってきました。

前号で、使い古した針を供養する「針供養」という習慣について書きました。役目を終えた道具に感謝を捧げ、そこで区切りをつける。それは後ろ向きな諦めではなく、次に進むための、ひとつの作法だったのではないでしょうか。

畑を手放すという判断も、もしかすると同じことなのかもしれません。木や土に感謝しながら、その関係に区切りをつける。それは敗北ではなく、次の何かに向かうための、ひとつの通過点なのだと、今は思っています。

古い中国の兵法書に、「勇気ある撤退」という考え方があると聞いたことがあります。詳しく研究したわけではありませんが、この言葉だけは、ずっと頭に残っていました。撤退にも、勇気がいる。むしろ、続けることより難しい場合がある。畑の前に立って、はじめて実感として理解できた気がします。

乗るタイミング、降りるタイミング

決断の中身を、もう少しだけ。

振り返ってみると、私の農業は、はじめから「タイミング」に恵まれていました。脱サラして就農した頃、ちょうど産直ECのポケットマルシェや食べチョクが産声をあげたばかりでした。まだ「ノーコード」という言葉すらなかった時代に、Webサイトもオンラインショップも自分の手で作れるツールが、次々と出てきました。JAという既存の流通に頼らずに、個人で直接、消費者とつながる。そんな脱サラ就農のかたちが、ちょうど成立し始めたタイミングでした。

そこから数年後、コロナ禍がやってきました。皮肉なことに、通販という手段にとっては、一つのピークでした。市場や飲食店が休業する中、ネット経由の売上が支えになったのは、私の畑だけではなかったはずです。

そして今年、大手の直販プラットフォームがひとつ、静かにサービスを終了しました。それと重なるように、去年の豪雨被害があります。

参入のタイミングも良かった。撤退のタイミングも、今振り返れば、悪くなかったのかもしれません。

これは、運が良かっただけかもしれません。ただ、あえて言うなら、環境の小さな変化を肌で感じ取り、そのつど自分なりに判断してきた10年だった、とは言えると思います。神風が吹いたのではなく、たまたま準備ができていたところに、縁が来ただけなのかもしれません。

残すもの、手放すもの

もう一つ、正直に書いておきたいことがあります。

私が手放したのは、「生産のための農業」です。出荷を前提に、収量を追いかける畑です。一方で、収穫体験や農家民宿といった、人と直接関わる体験の場は、これからも残していくつもりでいます。

崇高な理由があるわけではありません。単純に、そちらの方が「やりたい」からです。

もともと私は、デスクワークが好きではありません。新卒でエンジニア職ではなく整備士を選んだのも、机に一日中向かう仕事を避けたかったからでした。その後、19年間、結局は管理部門・経営企画というデスクの仕事もしましたが、早期退職を考え始めたのは35歳の頃、実際に動いたのは45歳でした。10年かけて、ゆっくりと決めた選択でした。

土に触れること、天候に振り回されながらも自然のリズムの中で人と会うこと。それは、収益性だけでは測れない部分での、私にとっての「働くこと」の一部なのだと思います。生産的な農業を畳んだ今も、その部分だけは手放さない。それが、私なりのバランスの取り方なのかもしれません。

足元にあったものへ

そうして私は、この生産農業という形の多くを手放す決断をしました。

10年間、天候に一喜一憂しながら向き合ってきた柑橘の仕事は、私の中でひとつの区切りを迎えました。そして同じ頃、日本の真ん中の山里で、シルクに関わる仕事の話が、私のところに届きました。

偶然だったのか、必然だったのか。正直、まだうまく説明ができません。ただ、柑橘を育てていた10年間、自然のリズムに合わせて生きること、そして自然が思い通りにならないことの両方を、体で学んできました。その経験がなければ、今の仕事を引き受ける決断はできなかったと思います。

豪雨で全てが変わったわけではありません。ただ、あの日、畑に向かって感じた「一体何があったのか」という問いが、私にもうひとつの問いを連れてきました。

続けることだけが、大切にすることではないのかもしれません。

221fabとオレンジの軽トラ

もうひとつ、この1年で起きた「偶然か必然か」わからない話を書かせてください。

このニュースレターや天草農工房ふぁおのブランドカラーは、アンバーゴールド（#fab221）と深い青（#221fab）です。実はこの数字、農園サイトのドメイン「fao-agro.biz」と、私の名字「筒井（ツーツーイ）」を組み合わせた、ただの語呂合わせから生まれました。深い意味は、後付けです。

ところが、このアンバーゴールドは、偶然にも「みかん色」に近い色でした。

先日、10年近く乗った軽トラを入れ替えました。新しい車も、もちろん「みかん色」に近いオレンジを選びました。柑橘農家として選んだ色が、たまたま自分のブランドカラーと重なっている。これも、偶然なのか必然なのか、正直よくわかりません。

余談ですが、日本の農道を走るこの小さな軽トラ、海外では「Kei Truck」としてカルト的な人気があるそうです。ニュージーランドにいる甥っ子から古い軽トラはどうした！？との問が来ました。日本の軽トラは古くてもニュージーランドでも人気で高く売れるらしいです。もっとも既に下取りに出していましたが。

私たちが「あたりまえの働く道具」だと思っているものに、外からの眼差しが価値を見出す。針供養や八百万の神の感覚と、どこか似た構造だと感じています。

証明はできません。普通のおじさんの都合のいい妄想です。でも私の中では、なぜか一本の線でつながっています。

この原稿を書いている最中、7月28日、熊本で最大震度7の地震がありました。天草も震度５でした。畑も、熊本の家族も、幸い大きな被害はありませんでした。

ただ、10年ほど前にもこの地域で大きな地震があったことを思うと、この土地でこれからどう暮らし、どう働いていくのか。まだ答えは出ていませんが、そんな問いが静かに胸の中に残っています。

What on earth had happened.

After the flood that hit Amakusa in August 2025, I couldn’t even reach my orchard. For a while, I couldn’t speak.

Mudslides had completely blocked the road in. Two days later, once the mud had started to dry, I climbed over it to get in. Part of the orchard had been buried too, and several trees were knocked down — some still holding fruit. These were dekopon trees I’d spent nearly ten years raising. Pruning, feeding, timing the harvest — I’d learned every one of them with my own hands.

I thought I understood what it meant to work with nature. I’d been through typhoons and brutal heat more times than I could count. But what stood in front of me that day was beyond anything I’d call “experience.”

What on earth had happened.

The question wasn’t only about the weather. Something inside me was quietly coming apart.

A year has passed since then, almost to the day.

When “once in fifty years” becomes “once in ten”

Kyushu has always been a rainy region. But lately, the gap between wet and dry has felt sharper than it used to.

I once wrote that Amakusa’s climate suits citrus well. That’s still true. But the range within that “suitable climate” seems to have shifted into territory I hadn’t reckoned with — a feeling that’s grown especially strong these past three or four years.

How many times have I heard the phrase “a once-in-fifty-years storm” in just the last few years? On paper, it’s once in fifty. In the body, it’s starting to feel like once in ten. I doubt I’m the only one who feels this.

Perennial crops — trees you plant once and live alongside for decades — are built on a long-term trust with the land. I’ve started to feel that the foundation of that trust is quietly shifting under our feet.

Is retreat the same as defeat?

Standing in that orchard, I had a decision to make.

Rebuild the road, restore the damaged trees, put in the time and money to bring it all back — or let go of the orchard itself?

Honestly, the word “retreat” repelled me at first. Quitting something I’d built over ten years — wasn’t that just losing? Some part of me kept circling back to that thought.

But given a little time, I started to see it differently.

Back when I worked for an airline, I was also involved in corporate planning — including decisions about when to bring in new aircraft, and when to retire old ones. How long do you keep flying an aging plane? That was never an emotional question. It was about safety, cost, and where the business needed to go next.

Continuing to use something isn’t always the right call. Sometimes letting go, cleanly, is the more rational choice for what comes next. A sense drilled into me during that earlier career came quietly back to me, standing in front of that orchard.

In the last issue, I wrote about Hari-Kuyō — the custom of holding a memorial for worn-out needles, giving thanks for their work before setting them down. That wasn’t resignation. It was a way of marking an ending so you could move forward.

Maybe letting go of the orchard is the same kind of thing. Thank the trees and the soil, and close that chapter. Not defeat — just a point you pass through on the way to something else.

I once heard that an old Chinese military text describes something like “a courageous retreat.” I haven’t studied it closely, but the phrase has stayed with me. Retreating takes courage too — sometimes more than continuing does. Standing in that orchard was the first time I really understood what that meant.

Knowing when to get on, and when to get off

Let me say a bit more about the decision itself.

Looking back, my farming life had good timing baked in from the start. When I left my company job to farm, direct-to-consumer platforms like Poketto Marché and Tabechoku were just being born. Long before anyone used the word “no-code,” tools were emerging that let anyone build a website or an online shop with their own hands. Selling directly to consumers, without relying on the old JA distribution system, was just becoming possible right as I started.

A few years later, the pandemic hit. Ironically, it was a high point for anything sold online. As markets and restaurants closed, online sales kept more than just my orchard afloat.

This year, one of the major direct-sales platforms quietly shut down. Around the same time, last year’s flood damage caught up with me.

The timing was good going in. Looking back now, the timing of leaving hasn’t been bad either.

Maybe it’s just luck. But if I had to put a name to it, I’d call it ten years of sensing small shifts in the environment and making my own judgment calls, one at a time. Not a stroke of divine wind — just being ready when the moment happened to arrive.

What I’m keeping, what I’m letting go

There’s one more thing I want to be honest about here.

What I let go of was farming for production — orchards built around shipping fruit and chasing yield. What I intend to keep are the parts where people show up in person: harvest experiences, the farmstay.

There’s no noble reason behind it. I just want to keep doing that part.

I’ve never been suited to desk work. Part of why I chose to become an aircraft mechanic instead of an engineer, straight out of school, was to avoid sitting at a desk all day. I ended up doing desk work anyway — nineteen years of it, in management and corporate planning. I started thinking about leaving at 35. I actually left at 45. Ten years to make up my mind, slowly.

Touching soil, being tossed around by the weather, meeting people within nature’s own rhythm — that’s part of what “work” means to me, in a way profitability alone can’t measure. Even now, having folded the production side, that part is something I won’t let go of. Maybe that’s just my own way of keeping balance.

To what was under my feet all along

And so I decided to let go of most of what this orchard, as production farming, had been.

Ten years of riding the weather’s ups and downs with these citrus trees came to a kind of close. Around the same time, word reached me about a job in silk, in the heartlands of Japan.

Coincidence, or something else? Honestly, I still can’t quite explain it. But those ten years of growing citrus taught me, in my body, both what it means to live by nature’s rhythm and what it means for nature to refuse to go your way. Without that, I don’t think I could have taken on this new work.

The flood didn’t change everything. But the question it left me with, standing in that orchard — what on earth had happened — brought me another question.

Maybe continuing isn’t the only way to honor something.

There’s one more thing that happened this year — another case of “coincidence, or not” that I want to write about.

This newsletter’s colors, and 天草農工房ふぁお’s brand colors, are amber gold (#fab221) and deep blue (#221fab). The numbers actually come from a simple pun — combining the farm’s domain, fao-agro.biz, with my family name, Tsutsui. Any deeper meaning was added afterward.

As it turns out, though, that amber gold happens to be close to the color of a mikan.

I recently traded in the kei truck I’d driven for nearly ten years. For the new one, I chose an orange close to that same “mikan color,” of course.

That the color I chose as a citrus farmer happens to overlap with my own brand color — coincidence, or not, I honestly don’t know.

As an aside: these small trucks that run Japan’s farm roads apparently have a cult following overseas as “kei trucks.” My nephew in New Zealand actually messaged me — what happened to the old kei truck?! Apparently old Japanese kei trucks sell for good money there too, even used. Mind you, I’d already traded mine in by then.

There’s something here about how an outside gaze finds value in what we treat as an ordinary working tool. It feels like the same structure as Hari-Kuyō, or the sense that the divine dwells in all things.

I can’t prove it. It’s just the convenient daydream of an ordinary middle-aged man. But somehow, in my head, it all connects along one line.

While I was still writing this, on July 28th, an earthquake with a maximum intensity of 7 hit Kumamoto. Amakusa also registered an intensity of 5. My orchard, and my family in Kumamoto, were fortunately unharmed.

But knowing that this same region saw a major earthquake about ten years ago too, I find myself quietly asking — without an answer yet — how I want to live and work on this land going forward.

儚いのか、貴いのか

小学3年生のとき、クラスでカイコを育てました。

理科の授業ではありませんでした。ただ、クラスに蚕がやってきました。校庭にたまたま桑の木が一本あって、葉を摘んでは与えました。

蚕は糸を吐き、繭を作りました。

そして私たちは、待ちました。

やがて繭の中から、蛾が出てきました。繭を内側から破り、羽化しました。白い蛾は、しばらく生きて、卵を産んで、死にました。

繭は、もう糸としては使えませんでした。

あれから40年以上が経ちました。今、私は日本の真ん中の山里で、シルクに関わる仕事をしています。

シルク産業では、蛾は生まれません。

繭が完成したとき、蚕はまだ繭の中で生きています。その状態で繭を茹でます。蛾になる前に、命が終わります。解かれた一本の糸は、何百メートルにもなります。場合によっては、何百年も残ります。

小3の私が見届けたのは、繭を破って出てくる命でした。

今の私が関わっているのは、繭から生まれるものを届けるための仕組み作りです。

儚いのか、貴いのか。

正直、わかりません。

羽化した蛾の命も長くはありません。でも卵を残し、次の命につながります。茹でられた蚕の命は途絶えます。でも解かれた糸は、ずっと残るかもしれません。

どちらが正しいとは、私には言えません。

前号で、針供養の話を書きました。使い古した針を供養し、その働きに感謝を捧げる日本の習慣。「万物に神性が宿る」という感覚が、私たちの文化の底流にある——そんな話でした。

今もそれは変わりません。

ただ、お蚕さんを目の前にすると、その言葉がずっと重くなります。

神性が宿っているものを、人間はどう扱うべきか。どう扱っていいのか。

答えは、まだ出ていません。

57歳で新入社員になって、最初の仕事のひとつが、繭から生まれるものを届けるための仕組みを作ることでした。

かつて校庭の桑の葉を摘んでいた子どもが、今ここにいます。それが偶然とは、どうしても思えません。

選んできたのか、連れてこられたのか。その問いにも、答えはまだありません。

あなたには、儚いと思いながらも、貴いと感じるものがありますか。

その二つは、本当に矛盾しているのでしょうか。

「ITは頼むもの」という常識

Noteに、Webサイトのツール選びについての記事を書きました。

でも本当に書きたかったのは、ツールの話ではありません。

57歳で新入社員になって最初にやったことの一つが、Webサイトの仕組みをゼロから設計し直すことでした。

前職の農業時代から10数年、世界中のノーコードビルダーを自分の手と財布で試し続けてきました。失敗も、乗り換えも、何度も。細切れの時間で、コツコツと。そのトライアンドエラーの蓄積が、新しい仕事に就いた初日から、即戦力になりました。

創業者にこう伝えました。「制作会社に丸投げしていると、改善するたびに費用と時間がかかります。身動きが取れなくなります」と。

農業10年で骨身に沁みてわかっていたことでした。

元航空機整備士として叩き込まれた感覚があります。「自らメンテナンスできない、それは安全の観点から好ましくない」。Webサイトも事業も、同じだと思っています。

道具の主導権を自分の手に持つこと。それは、事業の主導権を自分の手に持つことと、同じ意味です。

ただ、これはなかなか日本では常識になっていません。

日本のIT人材は約7割がベンダー企業に所属し、ユーザー企業には約3割しかいない。アメリカはその逆で、IT人材の7割弱がユーザー企業に所属しています。

3年ほど前の調査ですが、「ITは作る側の専門家に頼むもの」という構造が長年続いてきた結果、中小企業経営者の70.6%がSaaSを「聞いたことがない」と回答しており、小規模企業でのSaaS導入率は6%にとどまっていた。この状況、今も大きくは変わっていないのではないでしょうか。だとすれば、それがAI導入の遅れにもつながっているのかもしれません。

「自分で選び、自分で組み立てる」という発想が、そもそも生まれにくい土壌になっているのだと思います。

海外からビジネスで日本に入ってくる方に、一つお伝えしたいことがあります。

欧米では当たり前のIT自走の感覚で踏み込むと、思わぬ沼にはまることがあります。それは能力の問題ではなく、長年積み上がった構造の問題です。

私自身は、10数年かけて積み上げた「道具を自分で選ぶ力」を、57歳の新入社員として持ち込みました。それが一番の武器になっています。

Fleeting, or Precious?

In third grade, my class raised silkworms.

It wasn’t a science lesson. Silkworms just arrived in our classroom one day. There happened to be a single mulberry tree on the school grounds, and we picked its leaves to feed them.

The silkworms spun thread and made cocoons.

Then we waited.

Eventually, moths emerged from the cocoons. They broke through from the inside and hatched. The white moths lived a short while, laid eggs, and died.

The cocoons could no longer be used as thread.

More than forty years have passed since then. Now I work in silk, in the heartlands of Japan.

In the silk industry, no moth is ever born.

When a cocoon is complete, the silkworm inside is still alive. It’s boiled in that state. Its life ends before it can become a moth. The single unwound thread can stretch hundreds of meters. In some cases, it lasts for hundreds of years.

What I witnessed as a nine-year-old was a life breaking free from its cocoon.

What I’m part of now is building the systems that carry what comes out of the cocoon to the world.

Fleeting, or precious?

Honestly, I don’t know.

The moth’s life, once hatched, isn’t long either. But it leaves eggs behind, connecting to the next life. The boiled silkworm’s life ends there. But the thread it leaves might remain, for a very long time.

I can’t say which is right.

In the last issue, I wrote about Hari-Kuyō — the Japanese custom of holding a memorial for worn-out needles, giving thanks for their work. I wrote about how a sense that the divine dwells in all things runs beneath our culture.

That hasn’t changed.

But standing in front of these silkworms, those words carry more weight than before.

How should we treat something the divine dwells in? How are we even allowed to?

I still don’t have an answer.

At 57, becoming a new recruit, one of my first jobs was building the systems that carry what comes from these cocoons out into the world.

The child who once picked mulberry leaves in a schoolyard is here now. I find it hard to believe that’s a coincidence.

Did I choose this path, or was I led to it? I don’t have an answer to that question either.

The Assumption That “IT Is Something You Outsource”

I wrote an article on Note about choosing tools for building a website.

But what I actually wanted to write about wasn’t the tools.

At 57, becoming a new recruit, one of the first things I did was redesign our website’s entire foundation from scratch.

For over a decade, going back to my farming days, I tested no-code website builders around the world — with my own hands and my own money. Failures, switches, over and over. In small pockets of time, bit by bit. That accumulated trial and error became immediately useful on my very first day at this new job.

I told the founder: “If you leave everything to an outside agency, every improvement costs you money and time. You lose the ability to move.”

That’s something ten years of farming had taught me, deep in my bones.

I carry a sense instilled in me as a former aircraft maintenance engineer: a tool you can’t maintain yourself isn’t something you should trust, from a safety standpoint. I think the same is true for websites, and for business itself.

Holding the reins of your own tools is, I believe, the same thing as holding the reins of your own business.

And yet, this isn’t common sense in Japan — not by a long way.

About 70% of Japan’s IT workforce is employed by vendor companies, with only around 30% working inside user companies. In the US, it’s the reverse: nearly 70% of IT talent works inside user companies.

It’s a survey from about three years ago, but the structure — “IT is something you ask an expert to build for you” — has persisted for so long that 70.6% of small business owners said they’d “never heard of” SaaS, and SaaS adoption among small businesses stood at just 6%. I doubt this has changed much since. And if it hasn’t, it may well be part of why AI adoption is lagging too.

The idea of “choosing your own tools and building it yourself” doesn’t have much soil to grow in here, to begin with.

There’s one thing I’d like to say to anyone coming to do business in Japan from abroad.

If you step in assuming the IT self-sufficiency that’s normal in the West, you might find yourself in an unexpected swamp. That’s not a matter of ability. It’s a structural problem that’s built up over many years.

As for me, I brought the “ability to choose my own tools,” built up over more than a decade, into this job as a 57-year-old new recruit. It’s turned out to be my strongest weapon.

17世紀のオランダ。ユダヤ共同体から破門され、アウトサイダーとして生きた哲学者スピノザが「神即自然（神と自然は一体である）」という世界観を打ち立てた。その背景に、当時唯一の貿易相手国だった日本から流入した「八百万の神」の感覚があったのではないか——。

証明はできません。普通のおじさんの都合のいい妄想です。でも私の中では、なぜか一本の美しい線でつながっています。

「八百万」は数字ではありません。川にも、山にも、虫にも、土にも——万物すべてに神が宿るという感覚ですね。

日本には「針供養」という習慣があります。使い古した針を柔らかい豆腐に刺し、その労をねぎらって供養する。針は生きていない。でも、価値あるものがその先端を通り過ぎた。そこに神が宿っていた、と感じる。箸供養も同じです。

「ウェルビーイング」「サステナビリティ」「マインドフルネス」。現代社会はこれらの横文字を、まるで新しいものであるかのように追いかけています。でもその根っこにある感覚は、私たちがずっと前から持っていたものではないでしょうか。

新しいから良いのではない。元々持っていた価値観を、現代の言葉でもう一度「そしゃくし直す」タイミングにきているのだと思います。

少しだけ、私自身のことを。

1991年、航空会社に整備士として入社。その後、管理部門に移り、現場から事務に移って延べ23年間。45歳で脱サラして熊本県天草に移り、柑橘農家になりました。

気候変動については、農業を始めた頃からずっと感じていました。果樹という永年作物は、一度植えたら何十年もの付き合いです。産地そのものが変わっていくような変化が、少しずつ確実に進んでいる。その肌感覚が、ここ数年でだいぶはっきりしてきました。

そして今年、57歳。日本の真ん中の山里で何世代にもわたって守られてきたシルクの仕事に関わることになりました。今度は熊本からフルリモートで、事業戦略を考えたりシステムを組んだりする役割で。57歳の新入社員として、です。

なぜシルクなのか。

AIが当たり前になった時代に、蚕が繭を紡ぐ速度だけは変えられません。何千年経っても変わらない。その「変えられなさ」が、針供養の豆腐と重なりました。

針を供養するとき、供養されているのは針の「プロセス」です。誰かの手を動かし、何かを縫い合わせてきた、その時間と働き。それは数値化できない。でも確かに存在した。

シルクの手仕事も同じです。蚕が桑の葉を食べ、繭を作る。そのプロセスは省けない。省いてはならない。

AIとは真逆のものを守るために、AIを使って会社を動かす。その逆説の中に、スピノザが「神即自然」と言いたかったことの現代版があるような気がしています。

Let me begin with an unlikely hypothesis.

17th-century Amsterdam. A philosopher named Spinoza — excommunicated from his Jewish community, living as an outsider — built a worldview he called “Deus sive Natura”: God and Nature are one. And I can’t help wondering: might the seeds of that idea have come from Japan? At the time, Japan was the Netherlands’ only trading partner, and whispers of a culture where gods dwell in rivers, mountains, and insects were quietly finding their way into Europe.

I can’t prove it. It’s just a middle-aged man’s convenient daydream. But in my mind, it connects into one beautiful line.

“Yaoyorozu no kami“ — the eight hundred myriads of gods — is not really about numbers. It’s the sense that everything holds the divine: rivers, mountains, insects, soil. All things, without exception.

In Japan, there is a tradition called Hari-Kuyō — a memorial service for worn-out needles. The needle is laid gently into soft tofu and thanked for its work. The needle isn’t alive. But something of value passed through its tip — hours of someone’s hands, things sewn together. The divine was there. So instead of simply discarding it, we offer our gratitude. The same is done for chopsticks.

“Wellness,” “sustainability,” “mindfulness.” Our modern world chases these borrowed words as if they were new discoveries. But the feeling at the root of all of them — that humans are sustained within nature’s cycles, that the sacred lives in ordinary things — isn’t that something we’ve held for a very long time?

New isn’t always better. I think we’ve arrived at a moment to rediscover, through our own lens, a richness we always carried.

A little about myself.

In 1991, I joined an airline as an aircraft maintenance engineer. Eventually I moved to management — from the field to the desk — and spent 23 years in total. At 45, I left, moved to Amakusa in Kumamoto Prefecture, and became a citrus farmer.

I’d been sensing the effects of climate change throughout my farming years. Fruit trees are a long-term commitment — once planted, you’re in it for decades. But the ground beneath that commitment has been quietly, steadily shifting. That feeling has grown clearer with every passing year.

And now, at 57, I’ve taken on a new role. I’ve joined a silk business that has been tended across generations in a mountain village in the heart of Japan. Working fully remote from Kumamoto — thinking through strategy, building systems. As a first-year employee, at 57.

Why silk?

In an age when AI has become ordinary, the speed at which a silkworm spins its cocoon cannot be changed. Not by anything. Not by anyone. That fact stopped me.

A silkworm eats mulberry leaves and makes a cocoon. That process cannot be skipped. It must not be.

When we honor a worn-out needle, what we’re really honoring is its process — the hours it moved through someone’s hands, the things it joined together. That can’t be measured. But it was real.

The silk cocoon is the same. A process that can’t be rushed. A process that shouldn’t be.

Using AI to protect the very things that are the opposite of AI. Somewhere in that paradox, I think, lives the modern version of what Spinoza meant by “God is Nature.”
